I saw “Precious” and while it was a PHENOMENAL film, it was incredibly disturbing and lacked hope (in my opinion). I went to see the movie with a friend and we both looked at each other at the end of the movie and said, “well, what do we do with that?” The movie Precious left me with no action, meaning that I felt as if there was nothing I could “do,” even if I wanted to. I thought the film was incredible and some of the best acting I’ve ever seen, but it leaves the viewer with a sense of hopelessness and/or no action. What could we do to help the young women like Precious? This question was far from answered in the movie…or maybe that was the point?

Of the five, I’ve only seen “UP” (which is encouraging, fun, humorous — love the dogs). I’m intrigued with “Precious” and plan to see it soon. It is a vexing social problem — especially difficult to portray on film in an accurate way. And it is far more prevalent than the faith community (really, any of us) wants to believe. Sexual wounding is experienced in many forms and at many levels, especially in a culture like ours, and it does great damage to the soul. There are no easy answers, but recognizing the problem is the first step to finding ways to offer healing and hope.
