Government

Government exists primarily to

preserve order,

administer justice evenly

and protect individual liberty and property rights.

In the United States, we created a government of limited, enumerated powers and provided protection for individual liberties against government intrusion. At the same time, we created a government that divides and separates power in many ways, because we understand that power tends to corrupt. Our system of checks and balances is designed to limit possibilities for corruption by preventing any individual or element of government from becoming too powerful.

Someone who is interested in governmental leadership should be

dedicated to the interests of others.

Public service is a high calling, requiring integrity, transparency and a willingness to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Political leaders in the western tradition should never use public office to improperly benefit themselves. Elected leaders should be committed to serving all constituents fairly, making no distinction between citizens based on ethnicity, religion or wealth. Governmental officials must also be committed to the limited functions of their office, and not seek to expand the power of government beyond what is necessary even for well-intentioned projects.
